Places to visit near El Vaqueril

10 minutes to the nearest village of Brozas by country lane, with views towards the San Pedro mountains.

25 minutes to Garrovillas, a village with Jewish origins, look out for the beautiful doorways, the village square and its various churches.

30 minutes to Cáceres, declared Human Patrimony by UNESCO in 1996. Cáceres is one of Spain’s most beautiful historical cities, its cities are a reminder of medieval times, and of the grand era of the conquistadores.

30 minutes to Malpartida de Cáceres, where you will find the Vostell Museum (Vostell was a German painter and sculptor) located in an ancient wool washing facility. Los Barruecos is a natural monument made up of granite rock formations, storks’ nests, antropomorphic sarcophagi.

25 minutos to  Alcántara. The Roman Bridge is worth a visit, it dates back to 105 AD and crosses the Tajo river. It is a village with military history of the order of the caballeros de Calatraba, and also has Jewish origins, with a sinagogue and Jewish architecture.

  • Plasencia, worth a visit for its beautiful plaza mayor square, its palace-style architecture, its cathedral and its picturesque shops which sell regional products.
  • Coria, this village is surrounded by striking medieval walls and its XVth century Catedral de la Asunción as well as the Duques de Alba palace are worth visiting.

1½ hours to :

  • Montsanto, a typical Portuguese village, built on giant boulders on the top of a mountain. We recommend that you leave your car at the village entrance, next to the cannons and that you wear shoes without heels as the streets are cobble-stoned. Don’t miss this village!
  • Monfortiño, another traditional Portuguese village, we suggest you have lunch in O Paladar, a simple good-value-for-money restaurant which serves excellent Portuguese food.
  • Mérida, declared World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1993 for its rich Roman historical value.
  • Trujillo, worth visiting, it has a spectacular central square, several palaces, and was home to Francisco Pizarro who conquered Peru…
